The steel belt is made of the metal, it is best for the prevention of static electricity & electrification.

Steel Belt (31) Under Frozen Environment

I am Minami of the Sales Department of Steel Belt ‘DYMCO’.

Here in Yokohama, it has become considerably cold. Winter is a painful season for me as I am exceedingly sensitive to the cold weather.

The steel belts are very strong under cold and hot environment although I am weak to the cold. In a word, it is possible to use steel belts under the low & high temperature environments. It is well known the stainless steel has heat proof characteristics and many customers actually use steel belts under the high temperature environment. We have results to the frozen environment introduction of the steel belts.

To examine whether the material has enough strength, we do Tension Test for the each material. The plate material is cut from the coil and we do the test – pull the material to the cutting point. We supply only strong steel belts to the customer.

The perforation steel belt is made of metal material, which has very high rigidity compared with flat belt materials such as other resins and rubber. Therefore, it is used for the following usages; accurate transportation, flat conditions, high temperature environment, hygienic and clean environment, etc.

The hole and the pin shift gradually when the PF belt is put more than the tension value that doesn't slip. The hole is damaged, and the belt breaks at the end.

The mechanism of sending the steel belt is complicated, and does not work only by power to hang. The frictional force is transmitted in the receiving power on the curvature sides except the pin.

The pin-feed hole is open at the center or both ends excluding example 5 (please refer to steel belt 25). The pin is installed in outer of the belt pulley. The pin of the belt pulley is hung on the hole of the belt. This is sprocket pulley. The steel belt is wrapped around sprocket pulley. The steel belt is transported while being continuously inserted the pin with the rotation of the belt pulley.

I will explain on the perforation steel belt on this time. The holes made at constant intervals are called the perforation to both ends of the film for the movie and the film for the camera. Because the steel belt also makes the hole that hangs the pin on the center or the edge of the belt, it is called the perforation belt.

Dymco possess the data of the fatigue property in the welded condition of various materials. Under the examination for steel belts, once belt thickness and pulley diameter decided, the rest is whether it can be produced or not. Steel belts production starts from the decision of belt thickness.

When about millions of times begin to keep the horizontal, and it exceeds 10 million times, this becomes the horizontal. When this frequency is exceeded, this becomes permanent longevity.

First of all, when the steel belt is examined, this numerical value is designed for aiming. The standard of this numerical value is 700 times. The bend frequency is assumed to be 600,500 when few. In this case, meeting is required.

The above figure is plotting of the broken frequency, which is appeared when the steel belt is rotated under specific stress conditions. The numbers of point are samples, and the curve is drawn. This is called S-N curve.

The above figure shows the relation between the load and the expansion when the metal is put on the testing machine, which metal is pulled by the machine.
The steel belt uses all the spring steels.　Because the weld of the steel belt receives the heat influence when welding, strength is also weak. Therefore, it breaks by a numerical value that is lower than the parent metal.
For your information, the upper yield stress doesn't appear to the stainless steel like mild steel.

The following relation exists on the welded type steel belt.

This numerical value is only as a guide and 700 of the magnifications can be changed to 600 times and 500 times etc. according to the usage and the condition.

I am telling you on welded stainless steel belt design advice on this time. There are various belts: rubber, resin, timing, and V belt, etc.
Every belt has fixed minimum pulley size and roller diameter size, which is same for steel belts case and it is one of the most important items which we should be careful.I will explain this next time.

We take the following welding method: TIG（Tungsten Inert Gas)　welding, Plasma welding, and Laser beam welding, etc. The above photograph is a cross-sectional slice of the welded steel belt. The black spots of the diamond shape are Marks where the welded parts hardness was measured.

Steel Belt (15) Welded Steel Belt manufacturing method

1. CUT >> > 2. WELD

The welded steel belt is manufactured as shown in the above pictures.

1. We slit (cut) the high tension stainless spring steel band to target width.

2. Then we cut the belt to target length. Both ends of the belt are compared and welded, and we make it to the endless belt.

For instance, in high temperature environment, rubber and resin belts will be burned. In vacuum environment, if you use rubber and resin belts, out gas (gas discharged from the organic material) is generated and it is difficult to make high vacuum conditions. Additionally, stainless steel belts are suitable for food direct putting transportation and solve the problems of stopping on the belt and the difference of endless part.

Conveyor belts are made of rubber and resin, etc, which have both merits and demerits by its usage. The steel belt is made of the metal and the stainless steel is the main material which doesn't rust easily. The steel belts are used under the condition of difficult or impossible in rubber and resin as steel belts has own metal characteristics.

1. What is the welded stainless steel belt?
The stainless steel belt usage can be divided: one is for the power transmission and the other is for transportation.
I’d like to focus on welded stainless steel belt for transportation - conveyor.

Steel Belt (11) Making Process of the ring rolled seamless stainless steel belt

The ring rolled seamless stainless steel belt is produced: firstly finishes up in welded endless belt, and rolls out the ring afterwards. Therefore, the welding parts become same mechanical strength as other parent metal parts, and it enables to use for a small belt pulley.
The ring rolled seamless stainless steel belt is 'Belt which has same strength in welding part as the parent metal, and finishes it up in the flat steel belt.'

Steel Belt (10) Recommended belt pulley diameter

At 40μm, recommended belt pulley diameter is 16mm. If it is i=5, it is 80mm. If it is i=10, it is 160mm.
However, please note that the wrapping angle of the steel belt on the original movement side should become small if deceleration ratios (i) are taken up to ten, bigger tension power will be needed.
Please contact us when i=5 is exceeded or if you would like to use diameter which is smaller than 16mm.

In the above case, a ring rolled seamless stainless steel belt is used. The thinnest steel belt’s thickness is 40μm. The thickness of the hair is about 80μm. The ring rolled seamless stainless steel belt's thickness is a half of the hair. It is absolutely thin.

Steel Belt (8) Belt Pulley

For example, the original movement belt pulley (d): 20mm, deceleration ratio (i): 5, in this case, following movement belt pulley (D) becomes D=i･d=5×20=100mm.
Under steel belt transmission, the steel belt thickness is decided by the diameter of the original movement belt pulley, so thinner steel belt is required.

Steel Belt (7) The good example of the power transmission

The good example of the power transmission is a reducer. Regarding the power transmission, the diameter’s ratio of the original movement and following movement becomes the ratio of deceleration. Therefore, at the deceleration, if the belt pulley of the original movement is not small enough, the pulley diameter of the following movement are getting larger.

According to the usage and the process of manufacture, the nickel, copper, titanium, and other alloys may be used as the steel belt materials. Stainless steels are used as steel belt materials mainly, so it is called the ‘steel belt’ although the metal belt is correct name.

Steel Belt is made of thin metallic materials, which shape is open or endless. Steel belt is used for power transmission and transportation.　As steel belts has high tension feature so the expansion is minimum. Other steel belt features are heatproof, abrasion proof, chemical resistance, weather resistance, clean, and smoothness, etc.Steel belt’s main material is stainless steel, e.g. SUS304.

However, the past endless belts had faults such as joint part was weak and the roller diameter scale was large. Gradually to make an endless belt, both ends of the belt were compared and welded. The welded part has become the same thickness as other parts of the endless belt and the roller diameter changed to small one.

But the most endless belts have been used for the transportation for large-scale conveyors.

The history of the steel belt is old. The steel belt has been used since about 1910. At that time, when making endless belt, the both ends of end part of the steel belt was fixed with the rivet (tack) by overlapping, and the joint part was made endless.
