Due to the emergency declaration, 
'work from home' was introduced in Dymco in the middle of April.
Now the declaration was lifted.
We adopt staggered working hours from June 1.

So we work together again at our office.
We are finding little by little difference and merits of working in the office and working from home.

The second and third wave are predicted.
Also typhoons are coming.
DYMCO is preparing for those cases to continue our sales and production.

DYMCO is famous for its steel belts,
but we are doing sales of other interesting products.
As an Asian distributor of Hess Pumice Products, Inc. in the US, 
we import and sell their silica powders as abrasives.
They are used mainly for polishing glasses, metals, etc., 
but we also sell their powders as ChillDust, a product used for chinchilla sand baths.
Chinchillas and hamsters keep their bodies clean by bathing in sand.

May breeze has gone and we are in a rainy season here in Yokohama.

The first half of 2020 has been covered by news of "COVID-19, " the invisible new virus. 
We, DYMCO members, have taken preventive measures against infection.
We  adopted working from home and changing commuting hours.

We look at needs of masks and protective closing and 
think how we can help to ease this situation even a bit by our stainless steel belts.

Our belts are used in clean rooms.
Miscellaneous bacteria do not grow on our meltal belts.

Relationship between steel belt and pulley diameter

Relationship between steel belt and pulley diameter

Various thicknesses and types of steel belts are chosen for each usage.
Then what about pulley diameter?
A large pulley is chose for a thick belt and a small one for a thin belt.

Here is a guideline in the technical information of Dymco's web site.

For power transmission open end belts,
pulley diameter = thickness x 400
example: belt thickness 0.1mm x 400 = pulley diameter 40mm

For welded type conveyor belts,
pulley diameter = thickness x 700

But when there are holes in the conveyor belt,
we recommend pulley diameter = thickness x 800

 

The graph below shows this relationship for conveyor belts.

Yellow and green lines need smaller diameter than red and blue lines.
Yellow and green are stronger belts against bending stress than red and blue belts.

If you want to extend life of steel belts,
try to use larger pulley diameter than this guideline.

But when a load is not much, smaller diameter may be possible.

We recommend the best belt and pulley dimension for your application based on our stress calculation.

The Covid-19 is widespread globaly.
Many people get infected or even lose their lives.

In the beginning I thought it might be same as flu,
but it is a very horrifying virus, invisible and recognized only by electronic microscope.

We hope effective medicine and vaccination will be delveloped so soon.
 

Today I talk about surface treatments.
Have you ever heard of Tungsten carbide?

It is possible to creat high friction surface by spraying these particles onto the part.
 

High friction is realized by minute carbide metal protrusions after spraying.
These protrusions are super hard and have excellent wear resistance.
They firmly adhere to the part or the substrate.
 

This surface can be made on a limited area of the parts where wear resistance is required.
Both surface of shims can be wear resistant, too.
 

High friction surface, why is it demanded?

(1)  make only limited area of the part anti friction and non-slip

(2) fasten the bolt tight and non loose by adding a ring shaped sheet
(3) make smaller and lighter the fastening part where a large amount of inertia is applied
 

Our customers adopt this furface aiming at these effects.

Pumice of Hess is non-crystalline silica and harmless to human bodies.

We are facing COVID-19 now.  This is fight against virus.

In the food industry have been repeated food poisoning and food product contamination due to bacteria growth.

One reason is hygiene management on food process machines and food transport systems.

Generally, we can clean metal much more easily than organic materials like resin and rubber.
Especially stainless steel demonstrated little possibility of rusts.
So this metal has been used in the food processing industry and water related parts like sinks and faucets.

Dymco has started to work from home as a measure against COVID-19. 

We continue to hold regular meetings inside our company by Microsoft  Teams. 
We attend them from home, completely avoiding contacts among members and spread of virus.
On the other hand, we have no choice but to come to the office for on-site works like improvements and evaluation of devices.
We would like to work on development themes efficiently,
although it is not certain how long this situation goes on.

Once in this blog I introduced Dymco's "cooling roll."
This roll is tripled.  From the outer surface, there are a thin electroformed sleeve, cooling water and rubber.
Cooling water flows in clearance between the outside sleeve and rubber. 
This rubber covers the core of this roll.

When this roll is pressed against the cooling target, the outside thin sleeve is pressed and creats face touch.
The performance depends on how much this face contact area is obtained.
In addition, we need to obtain data how much heat is removed by this roll.
So we are working to prepare evaluation equipment like the one in the picture below.

We delivered φ100 × 950L for trial so far.
Now larger size is possible.
There is size restrictions in electroformed sleeves.

The Japanese Gov'nt declared a  state of emergency against COVID-19 on April 7.
We are still in trouble.
Dymco turned to work from home from April 14th.
We are not familiar with working from home and sometimes feel uneasy and inconvenient.
But we find advantages, too.
I concentrate on my work without interruption of phone calls. 
And of course time for commuting is none. 
So now I can fully work on things that I couldn't do when  I was busy.

Our customers use this conveyor in many ways.
They continuously heat and press the work,
keep the work in a certain temperature between the 2 belts, like plants in a green house,
laminate two material to make a new function.

In general the double steel belt conveyor presses the work with rollers.
However, DYMCO's conveyor does not press by rollers,
but uses square heaters and press the work.
Heating and pressing are done in an area, not in a line pressed by rollers.
Out conveyor is unique on this point and this improves productivity.

Our demonstration conveyor holds the cooling unit, too.
So cutomers can test heating and cooling in a streamline.
Of course we can set heating and cooling time, as well as continuous pressure and speed.

We receive many inquiries on continuous inspection on both surfaces of a transported work.

Actually more customers come to DYMCO from distant places

as they find our vacuum conveyor in our web site and get interested in it.

 

Their works are films, sheets, metal foils, glass etc. used for secondary batteries and electronic devices.

Expansion of IoT pushes those demands.

Rotary tables and single-axis robots may be choices when you inspect both surfaces.

But since they move back and forth, it is quite difficult to shorten cycle time.

Production lines also get complicated.

Why not trying our vacuum conveyor if you need to inspect both surfaces seamlessly in a simple form?

In February this year, "Technical Show Yokohama 2020" was held at Pacifico Yokohama Exhibition Hall.
One of exhibitors, JSP Co., Ltd., introduced Dymco's suction conveyor.
The real suction conveyor was not in the booth, but in Dymco,  20 km away from this hall.

Before this exhibition JSP came to Dymco and set their remote communiction device upon our suction conveyor so that JSP can drive it in their booth.

JSP observed electric current by sensors.  Also the attched camera sent images how the conveyor was running.  They received all these info in their booth.

Especially they demonstrated an alarm function telling abnormal operation.

One of our product line up is thin wall metal sleeve.  Thickness 0.1 to 0.3mm.
We can polish its surface up to Rz 0.1μm and less, same as JIS-‘01.
Much higher value of Rz is OK.
Also surface roughness and waves can be discussed.
The picture below is a polishsed Nickel seamless sleeve.

In this picture we can find dots of a surface stone plate,

but those dots are not reflected on the inner surface.

The outer surface is finer than the inner surface

New coronavirus is getting serious here.

Although DYMCO is working as usual, schools are closed.

People's gatherings, events and business meetings are cancelled.

And now we know that virus inspection system is not sufficient here.

There are cases that people in need cannot apply inspection.

１、Flat transport surface

Rigid metal belt convey things and yet serves flat transport surface.

Plastic and rubber belts cannot reach here.

 

２、Foils and films, very thin material is also transported in flat state.

Metal belt can hold air suction holes and realizes suction or vacuum transport.

Once film is placed on this belt, film does not move or fly away.

Its position on the belt is kept as it is and conveyed in flat state.

Tension is not applied either, so film is not stretched nor contracted.
