Double Steel Belt Heat Press Conveyor

In our lab we have one unit of double steel belt heat press conveyor.  This was made 2 years ago and has been open to our customers. 

This explicit features are
1. Compact.  Much smaller than conventional heat press units.
    Pulley diameter 90mm, while conventional pulley 800mm.
    Center distance 490mm.
2. Best for testing before volume production

Life test of steel belts and metal belts

Dymco is doing belt life examination, for our belts must perform well in various applications such standard conveyors, all stainless steel food conveyors, intermittent drive system, cooling and heating system, or suction / vacuum conveyors.
The picture below is high-speed belt life test unit.
Test belt width is 2 to 50mm and its length is 1000mm max.

Belt speed is 500~1000m/min.
This test goes on every day for 24 hours and data is stored.
We do this test until belts are broken or belts mark theoretical maximum life.  When belts are broken extremely in a short period of time, we examine its cause and improve belts.  This is one of reasons that our belts are getting better in belt life.

Thickness of our steel metal belt

Dymco's steel metal belts are almost less than 1 mm thick.

Thickness 0.2mm and 0.3mm, they look very thin.
However, they are belt material.
In other words, they are tensile to stand repeated rotations.
We need a lot of force to bend 0.3mm -thick belt with our hands.

The picture below shows how the belt material bends by its own weight.
Thickness is , from the front, 0.05, 0.08, 0.1, 0.15, 0.2, and 0.3mm.

The front on is 0.05mm thick, thinner than human hair (0.07mm).
Yet it is spring type and looks arc.  This way steel metal belts are rigid.

Precise drive puropose metal endless belt: Dymco ring rolled endless belt

We manufacture ring rolled endless belts with stainless steel.  These belts are used for precise driving in many forms.

Ring rolled endless belt is completely seamless endless.  Steps by welding are not found after repeated rolling.  So this belt is often evaluated for its precision compared with redundancy and backlash found in plastic belts and timing belts.
Precise driving of X-Y tables, driving of printer rollers, or trial of CVT belts.

Also the minimum thickness of this belt is 40 micron meter.  It allows introduction of small pulleys.  We may be able to make it thinner.  So if you need to used small pulleys, please contact us.

Steel belt, metal belt and sleeves in printing machines

IGAS 2015 was held on Sep. 11 to 16 lst week at Tokyo Big Sight.
IGAS, International Graphic Arts Show is one of the four largest printing related shows in the world, together with drupa in Germany, PRINT in the USA, and IPEX in the UK.
Dymco's steel belts, metal belts and sleeves are employed in various types of printing machines.

Our seamless sleeves are working as fuser rolls in laser printer and cpiers. 
These sleeves are just 30 micron meters thick and seamless.  Due to this thin metal temperature of fusing rolles go up rapidly, which results in shorter standing time of printers.

And imaging process in ink jet printing or silk screen printing, our suction or vacuum belts convey paper and films right under the ink jet head and the screen plate.

In digital printing and offset, our sleeves have potential to make blancket roll surface.

Web handling low inertia roll

As a variety of plastic films are developed for wider applications, thinner films are  being produced.
In these production, demand for lower inertia becomes apparent for feeding rollers.  Here we ntroduce our low-inertial roll.

 1.Structure of the low inertial roll
This roll is made up by the core roll and theouter sleeve. Its uniquness is that the core roll does not rotate.  Air goes in from the edge of the core roll axis and goes out of holes along core roll surface.  Due to this air flow the outer sleeve sweels and there appear clearance between the core roll surface and the outer sleeve.  Then the outer sleeve only begins to rotate, free of any resistance.

The outlook of the low inertia roll:  The outer surface is thin metal sleeve.  This sleeve only rotates.  The blue right end is the air inlet.

 2.Conparison of inertia with the conventional web handling rolls
The right one is the conventional roll.  This is made by steel, 1200mm long, diameter 100mm, thickness of the roll area is 6.0mm.  The left one is our low inertial roll, 1200mm long, diameter 100mm, thickness of the outer sleeve is 0.125mm.  When inertia of our roll is 1, inertia of the conventional roll is 48.   

 3.Effects of the low inertia roll
 The big benefit is improved production effectiveness by film conveying speed increase.  In general, when the roll diamer is long and weight is heavy, inertia becomes larger.  Also there appear speec difference between a conveyed film and roll rotation speed.  So there is limitation in film conveying speed.  Our roll is made up by the thin and light outer sleeve.  This light sleeve can follow the film speed, which increase speed of the entire line.
Other merits are 'being clean' and scratches become less due to lower stress between the roll and a film.

Metal belt, steel belt suction conveyor

We have a demonstration suction conveyor or vacuume conveyor as below.
This conveyor provides a flat stage for inkjet printing, laser or camera inspection, and many kinds of secondary process.

Contacts are coming from wide areas of auto industry, printing, food machinery, semi-conductors, and high-functional film idustry.

Especially Japaese customers visit us to have experiments with our demonstration conveyors.  Based on these test results we reach certain specifications of original conveyors of these users.

The city office of Yokohama autorizes  "Yokohama intellectual property mirai company" every year.  They evaluate companies' intellectual property and its positive usage.  This year 41 medium and small-sized businesses are authorized.  Dymco is one of them.

Nickel sleeve by electro forming

Here we introduce how our nickel sleeves are made.

First we prepare for a mother roll.

This mother roll is placed in basin so that Nickel ions are accumulated by electrolytic deposition on a mother roll surface.  When accumulation reaches the required thickness, this Nickel sleeve is taken out from the mother roll.

Nickel sleeve-fomed process:
Mother roll → Electrolytic deposition → Detached and separated

 This is completely seamless and a cylinder almost same as the mother roll.  These are unique features of Nickel sleeves that welded endless belts cannot compete.  Electrolytic deposition is being improved and heat restiveness is better than the conventional ones and  sometimes we do no find surface defects.

Steel belt, metal belt tracking by crown pulley

Today we further refer to tracking by crown pulleys.

As shown in Fig. 1 , crowning process is done on pulleys when steel belt is used.  'Crown' is a circular arc of curvature radius.  Due to this arc tracking is done.
We often receive questions like 'how much curvature radius is required for a metal belt?'
We reply R=W2/(8×h)
where W is belt width and h= crown height.
Then how can we describe curvature radius like this?
This is led by the Pythagorean theorem.
Please refer to a crown pulley in Fig. 2.
Here a half of W (belt width) is applied to a triangular on the right.

This is deformed to

h2 is much smaller than R.
R is several meters to several hundreds meters, while h is just 1mm or less.
So h2 is described as h2≒0
Then, h=W2/(8×R)

Curvature R is found here.
But how much is the value of h?

In case of plastic belts and rubber belts, pulley d\crown height is set to 0.3mm to several millimeters, depending on belt width and belt thickness.
However, this h is quite limited, quite low in case of steel belts.
It is just 100~200μm when belt with is 500mm.  Curvature radius here is 150 meters!  It requires sophisticated level of process.

However this crowning does not secure tracking.  Sometimes this crown pulley cannot control tracking of metal belts.  This is the very point that metal belt users find difficulty in controlling tracking.
In such cases Dymco listens how the belt is used and present recommendation to each case.

Steel belt, metal belt, takt drive conveyor

Stainless steel takt drive conveyor realizes positioning precison tolerance of 50 micron meters.  This tolerance may vary depending on conveyor length.  Howeve it is clear that this order of precision is realized by features of stainless stell belts.  They do not elongate under room temperature.  Thickness and surface smoothness is uniform in the entire belt.

Oil Skimmer Belt - Stainless Steel type - FAQ

We deliver stainless steel belts to an oil skimmer below.
When two drums or pulleys rotate and a belt begins to move clockwise.
When this belt surface comes up from water, it drags floating oil on water surface and rotates around the upper pulley.  Then the scraper takes up oil on belt surface.

These are answers to ten frequently asked questions on oil skimmer belts.

Q01  The stainless steel belt is covered with oil. The belt slips off an oil skimmer?
A01  Permanent magnet is set inside the upper pulley.  Also we choose magnetic steel grade for this belt.  This is why the belt rotates around the upper pulley all the time.  The lower pulley is heavy enough to keep adequate tension of the belt.

Q02  How come does oil adhere to a metal belt?
A02 More than 2 substances get together by intermolecular force among molecules, atoms or ions.  When oil comes closer to metal, oil is drawn to the metal belt by this intermolecular force.

Q03 In the illustration above, when the belt goes down in water, it drag floating oil until it goes up out of water.  How come does oil stay on a belt in water? 
A03 After a scraper removes oil on belt surface, intermolecular force of oil does not saturate on belt surface.  So floating oil adheres to belt once again stays even in water.

Q04 Tension mechanism is not necessary?
A04 Tension is made by the lower pulley.  Its weight pulleys the belt.

Q05 How high can it be?
A05 So far it is 7 meters max.

Q06 What about heat restiveness?
A06 The oil skimmer resists 80 degrees max.  However, at 80 degrees for instance, recovery rate goes down sharply because oil skimmer parts are not all in good conditions at 80 degrees and floating oil viscosity goes down.

Q07 How much is recovery rate?
A07 It depends on floating oil viscosity.  In general when it goes up, recovery rate goes up and when it goes down, rate becomes less.

Q08 Belt width, How wide can it be?
A08 300mm max.  This is within producible range.

Q09 The lower pulley. It does not come off?
A09 Flanges are for both upper and lower pulleys to prevent running off
        of the belt.  Belt edge of stainless steel belt is rigid. 
        It continues to rotate without frays and snags.

Q10 Is there a step on the welding line?
A10 Butt welding is done our stainless steel belts.  After welding particular process is added to make welding line flat.  When you touch along the welding line, you will not feel any steps.  So  a scraper is not caught on the welding line.

Oil Skimmer Belt - Metal Type 2/2

Oil easily adheres to metal.  When we remove it, in general surface acting agent or spirit solvent are required.  Stainless steel belt type oil skimmer makes use of this feature.  Metal belts are intended to collect oil effectively.
Factories of food, automobiles, and metal processing use oil very often.  Waste oil is swept by oil skimmers.  Oil skimmers take up floating oil only.  It, however, cannot collect emulsified oil or oil in water.

 Dymco sells stainless steel belts for oil skimmers, including belts that resist corrosion and that are magnetic and fits pulleys in water.  
We are also capable to make various size of belts, any thickness, any width and any length.

Belt length is obtained by calculation below:

Endless belt length L=

pulley diameter d×π+center distance between 2 pulleys C×2
For example, pulley diameter d=150mm、 center distance C=500mm,
welded belt length L=150π+500×2
For belt thickness, please let us know your pulley diameter.  We will recommend adequate thickness.
Stainless steel type oil skimmers are very simple structure and takes up floating oil vertically.

We made a oil skimmer belt that reached the 3rd floor from the 1st floor.  The total belt length was 15 meters.  Our belts are used in many factories in the world.

Oil Skimmer Belt - Metal Type 1/2

Oil skimmer catches floating oil on water.
In the belt type oil skimmer, one drum is down in water.  A belt rotates and takes up floating oil or floating oil is drawn by a belt when a belt moves up from water.  Then this oil on belt surface is removed by a scraper.

  The illustration below is an example of steel belt type oil skimmer.  One pulley down in water has flanges.  Flanges are for belt tracking for one thing.  At the same time they increase weight of a pulley so that it stays in water.

Pulleys are flange type and holds magnets inside so that even in water metal belt rotates along pulleys.

"Are there any special pulleys for stainless steel belts?"
This is very popular questions.

Yes, there are.

For welded endless belts and ring-rolled endless belts

we recommend crown pulleys with radius of curvature.

For perforated endless belts, sprocket pulleys are used.
There are pins on surface of this pulley.  These pins fall in holes of belts.  This way pins controls tracking and forwarding pitches of belts.

Continuous heating and pressing by Double Belt Heat and Press System

We uploaded a new page Double Press Pres Heating System.Heating, pressing or rolling is done uniformly between the two belts.

Also it is possible to add radiation heating in the previous stage and water cooling as below.
This system is compact.  C-C is 490mm in the upper conveyor and 990mm in the lower conveyor.  It is very convenient for experiments and as a prototype model.
This handy system is a good start to find out process conditions and to turn batch production into a stream of continuous heating and pressing.

Uniform tension in thin film transmission

It looks that everything like electronic parts and devices is becoming thin, light, and flexible.  CRT TV sets, for instance, were big and heavy, but they are getting thinner, employing films in muptiple layers.  

This situation demands speed and higher precision in thin film roll-to-roll transmission.  However, we know challenging issues like uneven tension from an uncoiler to a final coiler, thickness deviation, waves and unstable film positioning due to processing heat, etc.

In the coming Film Tech Japan on April 8 to 10, we suggest stainless steel belt suction system to solve unever tension in thin film transmission.  When the film moves on this conveyor surface, uneven tension in the passt process is totally cancelled and the film is conveyed under uniform tension.

High Precision Positioning Conveyor Belt

Intermittent transmission is one of popular inquires.
We often make sprocket pulleys and perforation belt so that holes in the belt fall into pins of sprocket pulleys.  This way precision in both belt width direction and transmission direction is observed.
